Brief Background

Launched in 2017, the Deen Dayal Rasoi Yojana was introduced in response to the growing need for accessible, affordable meals for the urban poor, daily wage workers, and vulnerable populations in cities across Madhya Pradesh. The program is implemented through designated canteens (Deen Dayal Rasois) that operate in key urban areas, offering meals at a nominal price of ₹5. The scheme is a part of the government’s broader social welfare agenda to address hunger, improve nutritional standards, and support the health of economically disadvantaged citizens.

The scheme is operational in all district headquarters, with plans to expand to other urban and semi-urban areas. It also encourages community participation and corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives to help fund and sustain operations.

Objective

  • Ensure Food Security: Provide nutritious meals at highly subsidized rates to economically disadvantaged individuals, ensuring that no one goes hungry.
  • Improve Public Health: Enhance the nutritional intake of vulnerable sections of society, contributing to better overall health and wellbeing.
  • Alleviate Hunger: Address hunger and malnutrition in urban areas by offering meals to daily wage earners, homeless individuals, and other low-income groups.
  • Promote Social Equity: Foster a sense of dignity and inclusion by ensuring that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, has access to basic necessities like food.
  • Encourage Community and CSR Participation: Involve local communities, volunteers, and private sector contributions to sustain and expand the scheme’s operations.

Benefits

  • Affordable Nutritious Meals: Beneficiaries receive a wholesome meal for as low as ₹5, making it highly affordable for people with limited incomes.
  • Food Security for Vulnerable Populations: The scheme guarantees access to food for daily wage earners, homeless individuals, students, and other marginalized groups in urban areas.
  • Improved Nutritional Standards: By providing well-balanced meals, the scheme contributes to better health outcomes and reduced malnutrition among the poor.
  • Reduced Hunger in Urban Areas: Deen Dayal Rasois help address urban hunger by providing a reliable source of affordable meals, especially for people working in informal sectors.
  • Sustainable Public Welfare: The involvement of CSR contributions and public donations helps maintain the sustainability and expansion of the scheme, ensuring that more areas can benefit from this initiative.

Implementation Methodology

  1. Establishment of Rasoi Centers: Canteens are set up at key urban locations, including district headquarters and high-traffic areas, to ensure easy access for people in need.

  2. Public-Private Partnerships: The scheme operates with support from local bodies, NGOs, and CSR initiatives. Corporates are encouraged to contribute resources or funds to run the canteens efficiently.

  3. Affordable Meals: The government provides subsidies to ensure meals are affordable. Each meal includes rice, dal (lentils), and vegetables, ensuring a balanced diet for the recipients.

  4. Community Involvement: Volunteers and social organizations assist in the day-to-day functioning of the canteens, enhancing community participation in social welfare efforts.

  5. Monitoring and Expansion: The scheme is monitored by local government authorities to ensure consistent service delivery and quality control. Based on the success of initial centers, the program is being expanded to other cities and towns across the state.

  6. Feedback Mechanism: Beneficiaries can provide feedback on the quality of food and service through suggestion boxes and online platforms, ensuring continuous improvement in operations.
