The Chandigarh Traffic Police was sanctioned as a separate unit distinct from District Police in 1974. It is headed by an IPS officer who is designated as the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Security & Traffic, U.T Chandigarh and assisted by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Traffic-Admin, DSP/Traffic (Road Safety-cum-R&D), DSP, Traffic (Central Sub-division), DSP/Traffic (East Sub-division), DSP/Traffic (South Sub-division) and Zonal Traffic Inspectors. The entire city has been divided into three sub-divisions and four zones and traffic regulation in each zone is undertaken by a traffic police team led by a Traffic Inspector. The internal administration of the traffic police is looked after by the Inspector (Administration), who is also the Incharge of the Chandigarh Traffic Police Control Room from where the traffic Helpline 1073 is operated.

Objective
The Children Traffic Park serves as the nodal agency for organizing and coordinating efforts of all Government Social and Corporate organizations in our community for spreading awareness about Road Safety. It is widely recognized today that the internalization of road rules and road discipline by the road users is a crucial prerequisite for ensuring safer roads and a smoother flow of traffic. Inspired by the Catch them Young philosophy the Road Safety Education Cell (RSEC) focuses its major activities on teaching our children the future drivers the fundamentals of road safety. The RSEC is headed by a Sub-Inspector and assisted by other officials of Chandigarh Traffic Police. The function of the cell is to educate the general public regarding traffic rules and regulation.
