Brief Background
Jashpur was a princely state before independence. The history of the region is quite obscure. Locals here say that there is evidence that the Dom dynasty was ruling the region till the mid-18th century. The founder of the present Jashpur state Sujan Rai defeated and killed the last Dom ruler Raiban. It is said that Banswara a small state in the old Rajputana province was the native place of the castors of Sujan Rai. He established his rule and kingdom at Sonpur. Sujan Rai the eldest son of a Suryavanshi king was on a hunting expedition in the deep forest when his father (king) died. Keeping in view the tradition and necessity of the occasion his younger brother was coronated as the throne of the king could not be kept vacant even for a short while.
Objective
On his return from the hunting expedition Sujan Rai was offered and requested to take charge of the throne. But he preferred to be a Sangasi and took to the forest. Wandering he reached Khudiya the capital camp of the Dom state. There he found that the subjects were angry and dissatisfied with the Dom king Raja Raibahar and they were on the verge of rebellion. Sujan Rai led the popular revolt defeated the Dom king in a battle. Now Sujan Rai became the king and a new state Jashpur was founded by him. Today s Jashpur royal family belongs to that dynasty.
Benefits
In earlier years the Jashpur king accepted the paramountcy of Bhosale of Nagpur and continued to keep 21 goras as a mark of respect and honour. During the reign of Mudhiji Bhosale in 1818 Jashpur State was brought under Surguja State for the purpose of efficient administration. However till 1950 Jashpur was included as a princely state in the Chotanagpur States which was administered by the Government of Bengal.Implementation Methodology
