It is popular in the past of Kondagaon that its ancient name was Kondanar. It is said that the Marar people were going in a gold cart, when the cart got stuck in the tuber vines while coming from the old Narayanpur road near the present Gandhi Chowk of Kondagaon. They were forced to rest there for the night. It is said that their chief had a dream.

Brief Background
Meanwhile an official of Bastar State in a meeting of senior citizens at Hanuman temple said that it is more appropriate to name it Kondagaon instead of Kondanar. The old route of that time was the old Narayanpur route. Hence the main families of Maraars settled on both sides of that route. This was the old Kondagaon. After the construction of Keshkal valley in 1905 the main road was built which meets the old Narayanpur route near Gandhi Chowk. After the construction of the new route new settlements started coming up on both sides of it. Rojgari Para settled on both sides of the new route. After the construction of the road of Keshkal valley the area of ??Keshkal was given to the Rathore family as land revenue. That family and the people related to them later settled on the Kondagaon main road.
Objective
The main road went from Dhamtari to Jagdalpur. Thus the main road of Kondagaon got connected to Jagdalpur the capital of Bastar. In the 1980s it was declared National Highway No. 43. Recently in 2010 it has been declared National Highway No. 30. During the princely period Kondagaon was under Badedongar Tehsil and its police station was also in Badedongar. Later Kondagaon became the Tehsil headquarters in 1943.
Benefits
The oldest people to settle here were Marar Koshta and among the scheduled castes and tribes were Ganda Ghasiya Halba etc. When the settlement of Kondagaon improved a primary school was built here around 1930 and a few years later an Anglo Vernacular Middle School was established. In 1953 it also became a matriculation examination centre. In 1955 the construction of administrative buildings and staff quarters began for the settlement of people from East Bengal. The Dandakaranya Project was made under the Central Rehabilitation Ministry which extended from Orissa to this region of Bastar. Electricity came here in 1958 which was inaugurated by the Principal of the High School.
Implementation Methodology
In 1965 itself Kondagaon was declared a revenue subdivision. In the princely era Kondagaon was earlier included in Hatia then Shampur and later under Sonabal Pargana. Kondagaon gradually developed rapidly and from a town it became a city. Earlier it was under the Adivasi Jati Panchayat then in 1975 the Municipal Council was established there has been progress in the arts in the city due to which bell metal crafts iron crafts stone crafts clay crafts folk art painting wood bamboo cowrie crafts and weaver crafts have developed considerably.
