Chandigarh, City Beautiful, was planned by the famous French architect Le Corbusier. Picturesquely located at the foothills of Shivaliks, it is known as one of the best experiments in urban planning and modern architecture in the twentieth century in India. Spread over an area of 114 sq. km. located between the States of Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh came into existance on 1 st November 1966 and was made the capital of both Punjab and Haryana

Brief Background

As per census 2011 total population of UT Chandigarh was around 10.54 lakhs.Chandigarh is a single Parliamentary Constituency with around 6.5 lakhs electors registered presently in the 614 polling stations.For Greater public information and outreach capacity transparency capacity building and empowerment of the citizens are the key areas which are being focused upon by the Election Department. Upgrading and refining of Electoral Rolls is a continuous process.

Objective

Electronic management of data has helped in creating a system where we are in constant touch with the electors through various mean.Motivation awareness and knowledge to the different sections of society is done through SVEEP activities and Electoral Literacy Clubs formed in Schools Colleges and other Educational institutes.

Benefits

We seek active co-operation of all the citizens of Chandigarh for setting up a truly citizen friendly and transparent system leading to free and fair elections with high voter participation.

Implementation Methodology

During consultations while some political parties supported the issuance of such guidelines others were of the view that it is their right and duty towards voters to make such offers and promises in manifestos in a healthy democratic polity. While the Commission agrees in principle with the point of view that framing of manifestos is the right of the political parties it cannot overlook the undesirable impact of some of the promises and offers on the conduct of free and fair elections and maintaining level playing field for all political parties and candidates.
